Savoury Mince is a classic Australian family dinner favourite. It's one of those dishes that can be made very easily out of budget-friendly pantry staples, which probably explains why so many of us grew up eating it.
Browned beef mince (ground beef), carrot, celery, potato and peas are simmered in a rich gravy that gives it so much flavour!
One of the best parts of savoury mince is how versatile it is. Here's just a few ways you can use it:
- Turn it into beef pasties.
- Serve it on a piece of buttered toast
- Spoon it over a bed of rice
- Place inside a jacket potato
- Cover it with mashed potato and bake for an easy and delicious shepherd's pie
Make a batch at the beginning of the week and use it in a few different ways for easy meals! You can also freeze it for those nights you just don't feel like cooking.
Why you'll love this recipe...
- Quick and easy
- Extremely versatile

Savoury Mince Ingredients List
Savoury Mince is a great recipe for the end of the week when you need to use up the produce leftover in the crisper! Here's what you'll need to make this dish (full measurements in the printable recipe card below)...
- Olive Oil
- Brown Onion
- Garlic
- Carrot
- Celery
- Potato
- Beef Mince / Ground Beef
- Worcestershire Sauce
- All Purpose / Plain Flour
- Beef Stock
- Tomato Paste
- Frozen Peas
How to Make Savoury Mince - Step by Step
Heat oil in a large saucepan, then add onion, celery and carrot and sauté for 5 minutes, or until softened. Add garlic and cook, stirring, for 30 seconds.

Add beef mince / ground beef and cook, breaking up with a spatula or wooden spoon, for 8-10 minutes until browned.

Add flour and stir through, then add in potato, beef stock, Worcestershire sauce, tomato paste and season with salt and pepper and stir to combine.

Bring to boil, then reduce to a simmer, stirring occasionally, for 15 minutes or until potato has cooked and sauce is thickened. If the liquid evaporates too quickly before the potato cooks through, add a little more stock to the saucepan.
Stir in peas and cook for 2-3 minutes until tender. Serve on top of toast, rice or a baked potato.

Storing Savoury Mince
Any leftover Savoury Mince can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days, or in the freezer for up to 2 months.
