air fryer tempeh

If you're anything like me, you're always on the lookout for tasty, easy meals that take a little time to prepare. Well, let me tell you about a little treasure I recently discovered from Indonesia: tempeh! This delicious, plant-based protein is a game changer in my kitchen, and I'm excited to share how to make it perfectly crispy in the air fryer.

What if I told you that in less than 20 minutes, you can have a crunchy, sweet, and tangy meal ready to eat? Coupled with mango marinade, it creates a unique blend of sweet and slightly sour flavours.

So, let me guide you through everything you need to know about this air fryer tempeh recipe and my go-to mango marinade, which will transform it into a delicious meal.

WHAT IS TEMPEH?

Tempeh is a traditional Indonesian food made from fermented soybeans (unlike tofu, which is produced from soy milk). This process gives tempeh its firm texture and nutty flavour. The fermentation process not only enhances its taste but also boosts its nutritional profile, making tempeh rich in protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals.

Tempeh is an excellent option for vegetarians and vegans, providing a hearty alternative to meat. Its versatility makes it a great addition to a wide range of dishes. You can sauté, grill, or, as we'll explore here, cook it in an air fryer for a delightful crispy finish.

WHERE TO BUY TEMPEH?

You can find tempeh in your local grocery store or Asian grocery store, usually in the refrigerated section near other plant-based proteins. Health food stores and Asian markets often carry a wider variety, including different flavour and brands. If you can't find it locally, you can also purchase tempeh online on amazon

WHY YOU'LL LOVE THIS AIR FRYER TEMPEH RECIPE?

  • So flavorful: The mango marinade infuses the tempeh with rich, sweet and savoury flavours, making each bite irresistible. It's the perfect balance of smokey, salty, and sweet, in your mouth.
  • Nutritional powerhouse: Tempeh is loaded with plant-based protein and fiber, keeping you full and satisfied. A single cup of tempeh (166 grams) packs an impressive 31 grams of protein.
  • Versatile dish: Use it in a variety of meals, from salads to wraps to grain bowls. Its adaptability means you can enjoy tempeh in countless ways, making every meal feel fresh and exciting.

WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU NEED FOR AIR FRYER TEMPEH?

air fryer ninja

  • Sharp knife and cutting board: For cutting the tempeh into cubes.

TOP TIPS FOR AIR FRYER TEMPEH

  • Cut evenly: Try to cut the tempeh into evenly sized cubes for consistent cooking.
  • Marinate longer: The longer you marinate, the more flavour your tempeh will absorb.
  • Don't overcrowd: Place the tempeh in a single layer in the air fryer basket to ensure even cooking and maximum crispiness.

SERVING IDEAS FOR AIR-FRIED TEMPEH

air fried tempeh
  • Salads: Toss air-fried tempeh into your favourite salad for an extra protein boost and a satisfying crunch. Add some extra dressing or vinaigrette for even more deliciousness.
  • Wraps: Use the crispy tempeh cubes as a filling in wraps or sandwiches, paired with fresh veggies, hummus, or your favorite sauce. The contrast between the crunchy tempeh and soft wrap is pure perfection.
  • Grain bowls: Add air-fried tempeh to grain bowls with quinoa, rice, or couscous, along with roasted vegetables and a zesty dressing.
  • Stir-fries: For a heartier, protein-packed meal, throw your crispy tempeh into stir-fries. It pairs well with a variety of vegetables and Asian-inspired sauces like teriyaki or soy ginger. Stir-frying the tempeh with veggies also helps to distribute the flavours evenly.
  • Snacks: Serve air-fried tempeh as a snack or appetizer with a dipping sauce, like a spicy mayo or sweet chili sauce. It's a great alternative to chips or fries when you're in the mood for something crispy and savory but much healthier!

VARIATIONS FOR AIR-FRIED TEMPEH

One of the best things about tempeh is how easily it takes on different flavours. Here are a few ideas to keep things exciting:

  • Mediterranean Air Fryer Tempeh: add olive oil, oregano, and a pinch of paprika for a Mediterranean vibe. Serve it with hummus, pita bread, and a side of tabbouleh for a complete meal
  • Spicy air fryer tempeh: If you like a little heat, add chili powder, sriracha, or crushed red pepper flakes to the marinade. You can also drizzle some hot sauce over the tempeh right before serving for an extra kick.
  • Herb Air Fryer Tempeh: add some, olive oil, garlic, and fresh herbs like rosemary, thyme, and parsley. This version is light, refreshing, and perfect for adding to salads or pasta.

SUBSTITUTIONS FOR CRISPY AIR-FRIED TEMPEH

If you're missing a few ingredients, don't worry! Here are some easy substitutions to keep your tempeh crispy and flavorful without a trip to the store:

  • Soy sauce: Swap with tamari for a gluten-free alternative.
  • Maple syrup: Swap for agave syrup or honey to reduce the sugar content.
  • Rice vinegar: Apple cider vinegar or white wine vinegar can work just as well.
  • Mango Juice: Try orange juice for a similar sweetness and sour.
  • Garlic Powder: Use fresh minced garlic or garlic paste for a more intense flavor, or onion powder for a milder alternative.

HOW TO STORE RAW TEMPEH

Proper storage of raw tempeh is essential to maintain its freshness, texture, and flavor. Here are some tips to keep your tempeh at its best:

Refrigerate: Keep tempeh in the fridge at a temperature of 1–4°C. It's best to eat tempeh within 5–7 days.

Freeze: Tempeh can be frozen for up to 3 months without affecting its texture or taste. To cook frozen tempeh, thaw it completely by leaving it out for about an hour

Dry: Tempeh can be dried for longer storage. To dry tempeh, slice it and arrange it on dehydrator sheets. Season it if you like, and dry until it's firm or crisp. Store the dried tempeh in a tightly sealed container in a cool, dark place.

HOW TO STORE AIR FRYER TEMPEH

Got leftovers? No problem! Tempeh stores wonderfully and can be reheated without losing its crispy texture:

  • Leftovers: Keep any leftover tempeh in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Freeze: Place tempeh cubes in a single layer on a baking sheet to cool down and transfer to a freezer-safe bag. They can be stored for up to 3 months.
  • Reheat: Reheat in the air fryer at 360°F (180°C) for 4 minutes or until warmed through. You can also use a microwave if you're in a hurry, but the texture may not be as crispy.

Maybe it’s because of the cute color—my kids really love carrots. Especially when they’re roasted with potatoes, the kids go wild for it… well, their dad too, haha. But I’m worried they’ll get bored, so I try to look for different recipe variations where carrots are the main ingredient.

I love Mexican food, so it's no surprise that one of my favourite salads is Mexican inspired. This Mexican Chicken Salad is full of good-for-you ingredients and is filling enough to be a complete meal on its own. The chicken is juicy and bursting with flavour.

It's on the table in 15 minutes. Yes, you heard right - 15 minutes! This does require a little multi-tasking, like chopping salad ingredients while waiting for the chicken breast to cook. But totally doable.

    Gigi Hadid Pasta 🫕🍴

Maybe this is the closest I’ll ever get to Gigi Hadid, hahaha. This Gigi Hadid Pasta is actually just a version of the classic Italian-American dish, penne alla vodka. But back during the Covid era, Gigi Hadid shared the recipe on her social media, and ever since then, everyone’s been calling it Gigi Hadid Pasta.

Plus, it's super simple to make with minimum prep time, so even if you're not a pro in the kitchen, you've got this.

Here's what you'll need to make this recipe:

8 ounces or 225 grams of pasta (like penne)
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 cloves garlic, finely minced
1 small shallot, chopped (or red onion)
¼ cup tomato paste
2 tablespoons vodka (optional)
½ cup heavy cream
1 teaspoon chilli flakes (or add red pepper flakes)
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
¼ cup Parmesan cheese, freshly grated
1 tablespoon butter
A handful of fresh basil for garnish
